Dr. Jesse S. Watson is a Southern California native, first-generation college student, community college graduate, United States Navy Veteran, husband, and father. Dr. Watson is returning to higher education after spending the last four years as a stay-at-home parent supporting two young children. Jesse served on the USS Frank Cable (AS 40), a forward deployed submarine tender that also serviced surface vessels with a home port of Naval Base Guam.
He has previously served in multiple student support roles ranging from a VA Work-Study Student to Peer Academic Advisor to most recently as the Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs at the University of Southern California Graduate School. He received an A.A. in Social Science from College of the Canyons, a B.A. in Psychology from San Diego State University, an M.Ed. in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs (PASA) from the University of Southern California, and a Ph.D. in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) program at Michigan State University.
His research interests are centered around racial politics and whiteness as well as campus ecology and the transmission of institutional messages. Additionally, Dr. Watson has researched institutional partnerships and marginalized communities in community college settings. His dissertation specifically examined the experiences of white social advocates and how they navigated mono-ethnic spaces on campus. He enjoys contributing to the broader higher education landscape as a presenter, panelist, and reviewer for national-level higher education research and practitioner-based conferences and is currently a reviewer for the NASPA Journal of Women and Gender in Higher Education.

VMF – PAVE Advisors
Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) is a peer support program that connects incoming student veterans on college campuses with student veterans who are trained as Peer Advisors who can help them navigate college life, address challenges they may face, refer them to appropriate resources on and off campus, and provide ongoing support.
The PAVE Program is part of M-SPAN (Military Support Programs and Networks), a group of programs at the University of Michigan developed to address the needs and challenges faced by service members, veterans and military families.
